Making It – Ep. 1 &2 Review
This past weekend I watched a show on NBC called Making It. It’s a weekly competition show featuring a group of makers competing for the ultimate prize of $100,000. Now that’s some serious cash ! I thought it would be kind of cool to have weekly posts recapping the show and what my thoughts are on the episode, crafts, outcomes etc. I might even do IG Lives where we watch together – but that’s still out there in the open. Let’s get into Making It – Ep. 1 Review.
Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman are the best hosts for this show. Amy, just hilarious and so cute. And Nick, an actual maker and DIYer himself who understands the complexity and creativity that goes in to each challenge.
So the show is set up with two challenges an episode. One quick one and one master project. There are 8 contestants ranging from bloggers, to interior decorators, to hobbyists and professional artists. You can read more about them here. So now let’s get into the first competition !
The First Project
Okay, before I get started this post does include spoilers. So, don’t read if you haven’t watched it yet !
The first project was about personifying themselves in animal form using any crafts they wanted. I believe that they have 3 hours for this challenge and these people didn’t disappoint! I think my favorite was Jeff’s Bee interpretation. The flowers were made from paper and cardboard and I don’t know, the intricacy and the detail were amazing. Another great one was Robert Mahar’s interactive design of the human animal. It was like a real puppet show ! Robert ended up winning the first round and got his patch – so cool!
My favorite part of this episode was when Robert finished his project, he had some time to spare. What did he do? He asked the others if there was anything that he could do to help. YES ! Crafters and makers and DIYers are the best tribe!
The Second Project
This was an awesome idea in which the contestants made two projects, a photo album (or version of a photo album) and a modern day version of a quilt. I think the quilts were amazing !
Jemma made one using some really awesome handkerchiefs from her grandmother and some embroidery hoops. She took a few down in her final project because she cut herself and got blood on the handkerchief 🙁 that was so sad because it was a cool DIY idea that was also sentimental.
Billy made a quilt that was SO KICK ASS! I mean I have no idea who the football player was but he made a video game 8-bit looking quilt out of felt. The detail of this was amazing, he even had shadows and it looked like something I would custom order. His photo album was an album in the number 55 (this guys number…again…idk lol).
Joanna made a really cool and one interesting wall hanging that I kind of want to try to make on my own !
The remainder of the makers made SUCH beautiful designs I loved them all and I have no idea how they accomplished these items in like, 7 hours! Jeff’s Heirloom album was so cool, he would take photos, and then take a photo of the sky – i mean genius ! I am definitely going to try to do that !
Just to catch up, I will quickly go through my thoughts on Episode 2 as well.
Terrariums – I loved this idea but I don’t think I would ever do it. My favorite was definitely the etched glass one. But to my surprise, Khiem, is actually from the exact same town I am from! I
The big project was awesome – A huge scale tent or play area and a toy. My favorite was the taco truck and I am so glad that Billy won the patch !!
