Hey there! You can tel by the title that I just finished a 5 day egg fast. What is an egg fast? I’ll get into that detail below and why I chose it, what’s it’s like and what I ate on it. Also every day I am documenting what I eat and how I feel and just keeping it real.
What is an Egg Fast?
It’s a ketogenic restricted diet that is, in theory, supposed to help you blow through any weight loss struggles or plateaus. It’s also a good introductory for your body to get into ketosis if you are planning to start a keto diet. There is some more information on this egg fast here that you can read up on if you’re interested.
Why I chose To Do This
I don’t really know why haha. I follow “I breathe I’m Hungry” on social media and when I was perusing her recipes this egg fast came up. I was immediately intrigued and curious. It sounded like something I could easily do, but more importantly it sounded like something as a precursor to the keto diet. I have been pretty interested in following a keto lifestyle, but have not really known the best way to do it. I want to do it mindfully, healthy and all in if I can. The main deterrent for me was that I am petrified of getting the “keto flu.” This happens when your body stops using glucose (from carbs) as energy and transitions to using your own healthy fat as energy from what I read. I thought this egg fast was a good proxy to see how I felt and if I really did lose any weight while on it. I’ll explain a little about me and my lifestyle as well as share a daily log of how I felt for the 5 days while I was on it.
A little About Me
I am a vegetarian for no other reason besides I have been for the past 16 years of my life. I eat dairy, fish and of course, eggs. It would be kind of hard to do this without being able to eat eggs, haha. I workout between 2 and 5 times a week with HIIT workouts, Yoga, cardio and weights. I don’t have weight loss goals, more maintenance and focusing on how I feel. I saw this fast and thought “I could totally do that”
So day 1 was pretty easy, breakfast was some scrambled eggs. I was skeptical about the bullet coffee (Coffee with butter and coconut oil) but it was actually delicious! I have a coconut creamer that I like and it tasted very similar to that. I wanted to just have regular coffee since I don’t usually add cream or sugar if I make it at home. However, this fast requires that you add fat to your meal with the egg, so I did. Snack was a cheese stick and lunch and dinner was egg salad that I had made the day before. I added a little sriracha which I think is okay?
Overall, Day 1 I felt fine and full.
I had the same breakfast for the entirety of the fast because it was easier. Lunch on Day 2 was deviled eggs, and some cheese. Dinner I made an omelet with a cream cheese stuffed filling – yum!!
I have still not gotten tired of eggs. I feel fine, but extra full. I have been drinking lots and lots of water to make sure I am hydrated.
For lunch I had egg salad again and instead of having cheese as a snack I added it into my egg salad. Still yum, still not hating the egg fast lifestyle. I have to admit this day I was extra tired at work. Maybe it was situational, maybe it was because work was nuts, or maybe it’s cause I didn’t keep up with my water intake. I didn’t have dinner because when I got home after Orange Theory I was exhausted and just showered and went to bed.
I am not going to lie to you this was the hardest day for me…it was national Doughnut Day and from what I know, doughnuts are not part of the egg fast. I held strong though, and finally made the snicker doodle crepes AND the salted caramel custard from the I Breathe I’m Hungry diet plan. Yes, I made both because I didn’t have a doughnut haha.
Saturday, and also Belmont Stakes day! I went with my sister, mother, niece and friends to the races. I was kind of nervous as to what I was going to eat. My mom, as always, came through for me. She made this feta cheese, egg, and dill salad that I ate. It was perfect.
This was actually the last day of my egg fast and I FINALLY got to eat some avocado ! I was craving it the entire time of the fast and finally got my fix.
I lost about 2 pounds, but that could also be from doing more cardio that week. I feel fine, not slow, not too hyped, just fine. I am also not sick of eggs, but I haven’t bought any this week yet haha. I am trying to stay as clean and low-carb as possible, but I did get a doughnut today and it was amazing. 🙂
