The first video of the year is live ! Interestingly enough I got a new e-mail today as I am writing this and I wanted to share my thoughts. Don’t worry, I am not going anywhere, but I thought I would give a Youtube update and my point of view.
Earlier today I received and e-mail from YouTube Partner Program that because I do not have 1,000 subscribers, my channel will be getting demonetized. So, basically advertisements will no longer be on my videos. The problem I have is not with the advertisEments or even the money, but it’s the attack on smaller channels like 1001knits.
The ad revenue is a great perk from YouTube and I always thought they don’t have to do it. Because they really don’t and I think a lot of people don’t realize how amazing it is that so many people actually are YouTubers because of the revenue stream.
Now, Since I’ve been on YouTube I have received one check. I know that I am not going to be quitting my day job over $100 but, it felt really good to get that check. I worked for it and I really felt I deserved it.
So If I’m not mad about no longer getting money – then why am I mad?
There’s a few reasons.
First, I make good content. I know I am biased about this but I feel that my content is actually good. I don’t just post to post and each video I make is well thought out and planned way before hand. I mix educational knitting and crochet tutorials with some fun chats /podcast type videos. I try to post once a week and also make the videos appealing with bright lights and good editing. Will I continue to do so? Yes.
My problem is that the channels that don’t make great content or are controversial or are just plain dumb…they get the growth, publicity, views, ad revenue, etc. While my goal isn’t to become Internet famous, it’s just to do what I love and share that with other people who love crafting as well. And for that, I am so grateful for my little community. I love chatting with you in the comments of videos and on my Instagram. I have connected with someone in Guam who watches my videos – how amazing is that?!
My fear is that if there are no advertisements on my videos, they may not have an audience reach and I won’t grow and I may even lose subscribers.
This leads me to my second issue, Hypocrisy. As I stated above, some of the bigger YouTubers on the platform just make content to make content. They give little thought to their videos and have teams editing them and post constantly. If you know anything about SEO you know that the more often you post, the better it is for search engines and performance. Which in turn leads to more views, subscribers and monetization.
I can’t post a video every day. I don’t vlog daily and I am not going to just post a video to post a video. I created 1001knits and I treat it like the brand that I want it to be. What I want is to be able to look at my videos and like all of them…which I will continue to do.
The hypocrisy isn’t even with YouTube really. But if you know the whole Logan Paul issue then you know that he basically made a video, and many others, being an ass in Japan. Sorry, I have no other way to describe his behavior. His video went against the YouTube policy, not family friendly and yet was still trending until he himself took it down. He also gained hundreds of thousands of subscribers from that incident…so wtf YouTube?! I can’t help but feel that the ad revenue, while it is little, is being taken away from me and given back to the people who don’t deserve it. If they do deserve it, I am all for it, just to be clear. I love YouTube and watch people regularly.
Lastly, the frustration lies with the fact that YouTube doesn’t have to do this. They can continue to put ads on any video, pay creators and still have enough margin left to stay afloat.
With all of that said, I want to thank my subbies and my community. I love and appreciate each and every one of you and will continue to post videos, patterns, tutorials.
I was wondering what you guys thought about this topic. Are you YouTubers? Do you care? let me know in the comments below or in the comments of my video !
